The Truth About Salmon Farming

All Scottish salmon sold in supermarkets comes from overcrowded, filthy, underwater factory farms, where parasites and flesh-eating sea lice are endemic. Investigators have filmed fish with damaged and missing eyes and whole chunks of their flesh eaten away.

To treat infestations and disease, salmon are doused in toxic chemicals, including formaldehyde, azamethiphos, emamectin benzoate, and deltamethrin, which pollute Scottish lochs and kill wildlife. By 2017, at least 45 Scottish lochs had been polluted with chemicals, lethal to shrimp, lobsters and other crustaceans. A medium-sized farm can pump out as much effluent as a town of 50,000, making fish farming one of the most polluting agricultural sectors for eutrophication, beaten only by beef.

The fish are denied the natural diet that makes their flesh pink. And because no one would eat grey salmon, they feed the fish astaxanthin, a chemically synthesised pigment, and choose their desired shade of flesh straight from a colour chart. They dye them pink so they don’t die grey.
