Noble Foods

The feel-good family business that sticks hens in cages and dumps their shit in the river

Noble Foods

Status

Noble Foods still locks hens in cages and, even though it relies on happy cartoons for its Happy Egg brand, investigations reveal the truth to be a whole lot more filthy, rotting and shit-splattered. And that is before we get to gassing male chicks to death.

Noble Foods is the UK’s largest supplier of eggs and is the owner of several well-known brands. One of them, the Happy Egg Company, offers an absolute masterclass in gaslighting the public. Don’t we all want to see cartoon animals leaping for joy on a box of eggs? And who doesn’t love to sing along with the Happy Eggs ad1 because Alexandra Burke is right: Girls do just wanna have fun. It’s just that the “girls” at Noble’s farms very much can’t have fun, what with all the overcrowding, broken bones, and decomposing bodies all around them. Still, we’re sure Noble Foods are good guys deep down. We just need to overlook the small matter of them throwing large amounts of money at the wealthiest and most powerful politicians in the country while polluting our rivers with toxic waste.

Violations

Animal Cruelty #6

1.

A 2021 investigation into The Happy Egg Company’s farms revealed horrendously crowded conditions which prevented the birds engaging in natural behaviours. Although deemed “free range”, many of the birds never went outside because the area they were given was barren with very little cover, which hens need to feel secure from predators.2

2.

The conditions created enormous stress within the birds who began to pick on one another, with some hens being pecked until almost featherless.3

3.

A 2024 investigation at another Happy Eggs farm revealed birds with severe prolapses, wings that appeared to be broken, and widespread feather loss. There were dead, decaying, and dying birds among the living.4

4.

Millions of male chicks are gassed to death every year right across the egg industry, including for Noble Foods and Happy Eggs.5

5.

A 2016 investigation at a farm supplying eggs to Noble Foods’ Big & Fresh brand, revealed birds confined in filthy, cramped cages.6 Surely things have changed since then?

6.

Well, Noble Foods did promise to be cage-free by 20257 but no announcement has been made and it appears that they are still on that “journey”.8

Community Impacts #1

1.

In 2021, Noble Foods was named as a polluter of the River Wye and urged to clean up its act by community campaigners.9

Dubious Business #4

1.

Both the company and its former chairman Peter Dean have been major donors to the Conservative party.10 Today, Peter Dean’s daughter runs the company.11

2.

In 2010, Noble Foods loaned its company helicopter to Prime Minister David Cameron for election campaigning.12 The flight took him from Surrey to Staffordshire, then to Leeds and Holmfirth and ended in London. The cost was valued at £6,301.97.13 The loan was declared as a donation in kind.

3.

Not to be outdone, the Chancellor George Osborne was also given two rides in Noble Foods’ helicopter. He flew first from Exeter to South Wales and on to Bristol, then a week later from Birmingham to Preston, then Pendle, Chorley and Knutsford.14 Anyone else fancy a go in the Noble Foods chopper? Give them a call!

4.

Noble Foods has been investigated more than once over alleged competition and anti-trust breaches.[15, 16]

Environment Impacts #1

1.

Noble Foods leaked 26,000 litres of untreated toxic wastewater from its slaughterhouse in Lincolnshire which polluted local waterways. The company was fined £50,000 after toxic levels of ammonia, more than 80 times the natural level, were found in local streams.17

Food Safety #2

1.

Inspectors found dented, dirty, and cracked eggs when they visited Noble Foods’ egg-packing plant in Oxfordshire in 2021. The company admitted nine hygiene breaches and was fined £47,000.18

2.

At its most recent audit (October 2024)19 Noble Foods slaughterhouse – yes, it slaughters the hens as soon as younger birds are more profitable – was found to be in breach of three hygiene regulations. These included failing to ensure “animal by-products” (the offal, blood, and bits of dead animal they can’t sell) were not stored hygienically.

Workers Rights #3

1.

In 2025, a worker died at a Noble Foods’ feed facility in Derbyshire. The incident is currently being investigated by the police and Health and Safety Executive.20

2.

Six Lithuanian workers successfully brought a £1-million modern slavery claim against a chicken-catching company, with the case raising questions about how much Noble Foods knew of the men’s ordeal.21 The workers sometimes went without pay for weeks on end and were forced to sleep in a van as they travelled between Noble Foods' (and other) farms.22

3.

Noble Foods scores very low on employee wellbeing.23 Employees tend to use words like “stressful”, “demoralising”, “unfair”, and “unsafe” about Noble Foods while others are a whole lot less complimentary.

Empty Promises

They Say...

The care with which we handle day old chicks is matched only by our treatment of spent hens at the end of their laying life.

We Say…

This is 100% true! Noble Foods gasses to death both day-old male chicks and spent hens.24 They do indeed offer them the same level of “care” in the same way that Patrick Bateman offers the same level of care to both dogs and homeless people.
